Interpol issues alerts for 16 Dubai suspects
09-03-2010,13:19
Agencies - The international police agency Interpol issued alerts on Monday for 16 additional suspects linked to the assassination of Hamas leader Mahmoud Al-Mabhouh in Dubai in January.
The agency said it issued the “red notices” after receiving information from Dubai police linking the 16 to the murder. The total number of people sought by Interpol in the probe is 27, including members of two distinct “teams” involved in the alleged plot.
Interpol said in a statement on its website that the 16 newly-listed suspects belonged to a “team” that tracked Mabhou’d movements. This group aided and abetted a "smaller core group alleged to have carried out the killing."
Interpol Secretary-General Ronald Noble said in the statement that a "thorough investigation" by Dubai police "had established ‘clear’ links through passport records and video surveillance of individuals and groups, as well as through DNA analysis, witness interviews and hotel, credit card, phone and transport records."
Of the newly-identified suspects, only one had never before been identified by Dubai police. According to The Associated Press, Interpol revealed his photo and claimed name for the first time, releasing a photo of a smiling, dark-haired young man and listing his alias as Joshua Aaron Krycer. It did not give his age or nationality, AP reported.
Dubai police have also agreed to enter DNA profiles and other evidence recovered from the crime scene into Interpol’s international databases, the agency said.
The “red notices” are not arrest warrants, but alert member states that another member is seeking the arrest and extradition of the suspects.
The 16 suspects include six who were using British passports and three using Australian passports, along with several whose nationalities were not given.
The previously-identified groups of 11 included people traveling on British, French, Irish, and German passports.
